MATERIALS

PROCEDURE

Introduction:

Review that last week students planted peas to grow pea shoots. Review the word trellis and why a trellis can help peas grow. Tell students that they will be designing their trellises today but are first going to explore how different plants grow in different ways. Read The Surprise Garden by Zoe Hall or Plants Can’t Sit Still by Rebecca E. Hirsch. Both have great illustrations of plants. Discuss how some plants crawl, climb, spread, etc. as you read.

Activity

After reading the story, discuss which plants like to have the support of a trellis. Show students the pea trellis design slideshow to give them a better understanding of some possible trellis designs.

Next, give students in groups time to make a collaborative drawing of the trellis they want to make for their pea shoots

Wrap Up/Assessment:

Gardeners should finish the lesson by making a science drawing of the pea shoots they planted last week in their Pea Project Booklet and should water their peas.
