PROCEDURE

Introduction:
What is a tool?
Show different garden tools and demonstrate how each one is used and what each one is named. What should you do before using a tool in the garden?
Have students sort tools. How many of each tool do we have?

Activity:
Go outside and demonstrate how each tool is used in the garden. Teach students that tools should be used “low and slow” and never go above their hips. Next, divide
students into tool teams, giving each student one tool, and let them work in the garden (5-10 minutes). Show students where to return tools.

Wrap up/ Assessment:
How did your tool help you do garden work? What do we do with garden tools when we are done with them?

FOLLOW UP & EXTENSIONS

Use tools in different seasons and for different tasks in the garden. Before using tools, always ask students to name the tool and explain how to use it.
