OBJECTIVE
Students will learn the word trellis
Students will plant pea seeds
Students will understand some plants like to have support as they grow
ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS
How do I grow food?
What do plants need to grow?
MATERIALS
- Soil
- Pea seeds that have been soaked for 12-24 to help them germinate
- Planting tray with no holes (1 per small group)
- Watering can
- Picture of a trellis
- Pea Project Booklets (1 per student)
- Laptop or projector to play Growing Pea Time Lapse from Seemingly Forever Timelapse
PROCEDURE
Introduction:
Play Growing Pea time lapse video of a pea plant growing. While watching the video, ask students: What does a pea plant grow towards? What are the tendrils doing? What do you notice about how the roots grow? Do all plants grow like peas and need support?
Activity
Teach students the word trellis and show them a picture of a trellis. Tell students they will be growing pea shoots and making trellises to support their peas.
Model how to plant peas in a tray with no holes by adding soil, pressing the peas gently on top and then watering. Discuss pea spacing and how because they will be harvested as shoots they will need less space.
At this time, also tell students after they plant their peas they will make a science drawing of their planted peas. Discuss the science drawing ABC’s Accurate, Big, Colorful and go over each word. Remind students there shouldn’t be anything in your drawing that you do not see in front of you. If you are inside would it make sense for there to be a sun in the drawing? What things are important to include in the drawing?
Break students into groups of 3 or 4 and have students fill trays with soil, plant seeds and water.
Wrap Up/Assessment:
Students make a science drawing of their planted seeds in their Pea Project Booklet. Discuss how else students can help the peas grow. By giving them a sunny spot and water!
