PROCEDURE
Introduction
Start with the Seed Yoga lesson or a growing song to review the parts of a plant.
One growing song option: start down low, curled up like a seed. Sing to the tune of The Wheels on the Bus: “This the way we… grow our roots/ pop through the soil/ stretch our stem/ turn our leaves to the sun/ open our flowers/ smile to the sun… when springtime is here”.
Activity
In the garden, review the plant parts with the kids (roots, stem, leaf, flower). Tell them which part you will look for first, and collectively disperse to find it. Have them make observations about their plant part: how does it feel, what color is it, what does it look like?
FOLLOW UP & EXTENSIONS
- make plant part burritos – for example take a carrot (root), a bean (seed), a nasturtium (flower) and wrap it in a lettuce (leaf).
