PROCEDURE
Introduction:
Review what season we are in. Ask students some of the differences they notice from fall to winter. Ask students what kinds of things are growing in the garden in winter.
Ask students, “if there is no food for us in the garden, can we still eat?” How? Review what farm animals eat. Ask students, “if there is no grass for the farm animals, can they still eat?”
Review the bird feeders. Ask students, “Why did we make bird feeders? What do birds eat in the spring, summer, and fall? Why can’t they find those things in winter?”
We are going to try to figure out what kind of food goes to the animals in winter, and what kind of food goes to the animals in summer.
Activity:
At their desks, students have their own “Animals in Winter: Food” worksheet. On the desks there are bowls/pictures of grass, hay, grain (different kinds), worms. Students have to choose which food goes to the animals during summer, and which food goes to the animals in winter. In the “summer” box, students draw a picture of one of the types of food that animals eat in summer. In the “winter” box, students draw a picture of one of the types of food that animals eat in winter.
Wrap up/ Assessment:
Students share their drawings back in the circle.
